Maths
At our school, we believe that every child can thrive in mathematics. We follow a mastery approach rooted in secure understanding, carefully sequenced learning and joyful curiosity. Our aim is for pupils to become confident, fluent mathematicians who can reason, problem-solve and make meaningful links across the curriculum.
Our Approach: White Rose Maths
We use the White Rose Maths curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6. It provides a clear, progressive journey through mathematical ideas, ensuring that children build strong foundations before moving forward.
White Rose supports our approach through:
-Small, carefully crafted steps that build deep understanding
-Daily opportunities for fluency, reasoning and problem-solving
-Consistent representations and models that follow children through the school
-High expectations for all, with support or challenge where needed
-Teachers adapt lessons to meet the individual needs of their classes while keeping the structure and progression that White Rose provides.
Mastering Number
In EYFS, we use Mastering Number to strengthen number sense, subitising, composition of number and early calculation strategies. These daily sessions help children develop confidence, flexibility and familiarity with number relationships.
In Key Stage 1, Mastering Number continues as an additional daily skills session alongside the main White Rose Maths lesson. These short, focused sessions support pupils in securing:
-Firm knowledge of number bonds
-Rapid recall of key facts
-Flexible strategies for early addition and subtraction
-Confidence working with numbers up to 20 and beyond
This dual approach gives children both breadth and depth, allowing them to develop strong fluency that supports later reasoning.
Assessment
Teachers continually assess learning through questioning, observation and classwork. Termly assessments help us track progress and identify next steps. Regular moderation within school ensures consistency and high expectations.

How You Can Support Early Maths at Home
-Talk about numbers in everyday life: counting stairs, sharing food, reading house numbers
-Practise quick recall of number bonds to 5, 10 and 20
-Encourage children to explain how they worked something out
-Play simple games involving dice, cards or counting
-Praise their effort and perseverance
-Use online tools such as numbats to support quick recall of number facts
Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
In Year 4, all children in England take part in the Multiplication Tables Check. This online check assesses how fluently children can recall multiplication facts up to 12×12.
To help prepare, we:
-Practise times tables regularly within lessons
-Use quick-recall activities and games
-Teach patterns, links and strategies (e.g. using known facts to find new ones)
-Encourage regular short practice at home
The aim is not to test children under pressure, but to give them the quick, confident recall they need for upper Key Stage 2 maths. We use Times Tables Rock Stars across the school to support multiplication and division recall. Children can practise at home and in school using quick-fire games that automatically adapt to their level. It helps children:
-Build confidence and accuracy
-Improve speed of recall
-Compete in friendly challenges
-Enjoy learning their tables in a fun, motivating way
Short, regular practice on TTRS makes a big difference — just 5 minutes a day can lead to huge progress.
